Manchester Social 101 was recently invited to review the Christmas lunch preview at the Double Tree at the Hilton in Manchester.

I was joined by two other journalists and their partners. We began the event with a cocktail from the Xmas menu, it was fruity and refreshing and the venue was very cosy – It almost felt like winter despite it being almost 30 degrees outside on an unseasonably warm day.

After our cocktail we were escorted to the table where we were offered a glass of wine to complement our starter.

I had chosen the beetroot cured salmon, goat’s cheese fritters and candied hazelnuts, which was absolutely lovely. The beetroot provided a twist on the traditional cured salmon and the goat’s cheese fritters balanced the palate making for a mouth-watering starter that left you hungry for more.

Next up for the main we were provided with a recommendation for the best red wine to accompany our Christmas menu choices. My choice for the day was the most amazing slow cooked fillet steak that I have ever tasted (it literally melted in my mouth), braised ox cheek, truffle mash and baby onions. I can honestly say that it was one of the best steak dishes I have had in a long time – could not recommend it more!

Finally for desert I couldn’t resist the chocolate torte, chocolate soil, orange ice cream, which did not disappoint!

As to not break with tradition and to get the full Xmas experience, we finished on a high note of coffee and mini mince pies – stunning!
