Dreamscape Gardens’ Show Garden, which featured on New Cathedral Street as part of Dig the City, Manchester’s urban gardening festival, has found a new permanent home in Piccadilly Basin as part of the Manchester Garden City scheme. The garden will be looked after by the local gardening group – the Northern Quarter Greening Group.
The garden, which includes lots of balcony-style planting, a small water feature and view of the Rochdale Canal near the Hacienda apartments on Whitworth Street West, will be located in Town Centre Securities’ Dale Street car park next to the Grow Box allotments.
With the focus on urban gardening and making the most of our outdoor space, Dig the City organisers – the Heart of Manchester Business Improvement District (BID) – are keen the festival leaves a lasting legacy to the people of Manchester. The event took place between 3-11 August and is set to return next year.
Dan Newby, Owner of Dreamscape Gardens said: “We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback from visitors to Dig the City. Having seen how much people enjoyed our garden and how it has inspired people to try gardening themselves, we’re thrilled the garden has found a new home in the Northern Quarter and are delighted local residents will help to look after it.”
Aaron Cornish from the Northern Quarter Greening Group said: “The Grow Boxes have been really popular and are blooming with plants, flowers and vegetables – so it’s great to have this garden to care for and enjoy as well. We’ve got a thriving green-fingered community here, and this lovely new space will enhance the area even more.”
Emma Cooke, Manchester Garden City’s Project manager at CityCo added: “This was our first and is the most established Garden City scheme, so it seems fitting that the Dig the City legacy garden finds a home here. It will be well looked after by the Northern Quarter Greening Group, who already do a wonderful job taking care of the local environment. We’re always looking for volunteers to help with our Garden City projects, and if anyone wants to get involved, please come along to our next gardening day on the 24 August.”
Suzanne Gallagher Asset Manager at Town Centre Securities, who own the land at Piccadilly Basin said: “We were very happy to provide a home for the Grow Boxes three years ago and are pleased they have become so popular with the local community. To have the Dig the City Dreamscape legacy garden planted here is fantastic and really enhances this corner of Piccadilly Basin. It’s a lovely installation and well worth a visit if you’ve not had a chance to see it.”
Volunteers interested in the Manchester Garden City ‘spruce up’ gardening day – 12pm – 4pm on Saturday 24 August can email gardencity@cityco.com for details.
Activities on the day will include wood-staining benches, laying bark, clearing weeds and watering and general maintenance of the new Dreamscape legacy garden in Piccadilly Basin.
