Every Monday at 8 p.m. Mancunions flock to the Odeon in The Printworks to experience movie classics back on the big screen in the format they were intended
Many of the £4 shows sell out in fact it will be Brad Pitt classic Fight Club’s second appearance as a Flashback Film and the film Aliens has been so successful it keeps making guest appearances in lots of seasons, continuing to sell out sometimes even warranting extra screens and slots.
This new season there’s something for everyone with Arnie’s horror/action film Predator to cult classics such as The Big Lebowski. Brad Pitt fans are also in for a treat as there are two of his films this time round including the science fiction film Twelve Monkeys. This season’s flashback also features film Dead Man’s Shoes from 2004, a British psychological thriller directed by Shane Meadows that’s set locally in Matlock, Derbyshire.
A real ‘flashback community’ has spread across Manchester, with many cinema goers returning to more than one flashback showing. The majority of the screenings receive applause and sometimes a standing ovation at the end. Fans also seem to show more respect than in normal box office films too with disturbance by talking, use of mobile phones etc at an all time low.
There’s also a great deal of audience participation such as future suggestions of films they’d like to see, discussions before and after certain screenings (and via the unique Twitter account @FlashBackFans). They are fast becoming more unique events than just pure screenings often with accompanying entertainment, fancy dress competitions, raffles and prize draws too. Other Printworks venues also offer food and drink deals see www.theprintworks.com for more details of these.
Centre Director for The Printworks Fred Booth explains;
“Flashback Films have proved very popular so we’re excited to welcome another season to The Printworks and hope there are many more to come. I’m personally really looking forward to seeing The Big Lebowski again on the big screen.”
