Over a year ago there was a great buzz going around Sydney that Leo was here filming (see www.sydneysocial101.com) . He would been seen popping up from time to time but no one really new where he was. This was very much like the person he was portraying in The Great Gatsby. The film is set in the roaring 20’s where everyone has their money invested in the stock markets and is spending it on fancy clothes and cars.

The film starts out with Toby Maguire (Nick Carraway) explaining his story of how he met Gatsby. Were told that Gatsby would put on extravagant parties where everyone was invited but no one knew who or where he was.

Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby) is outstanding and it is hard to imagine anyone else in the role. There is something mysterious about Gatsby as he seems to know everyone important and is respected by everyone. However it becomes clear that he does have a hidden agenda which comes out fairly early in the film.

Not to be outdone, the film also stars Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan) and Joel Edgerton (Tom Buchanan) as the millionaire couple who Nick has been long time friends with. All four main characters work really well together and I can see a possible couple of oscar nominations coming up. Especially for Toby Maguire.

The cinematography in the film was incredible. All the vibrant colours within the environment really stood out. I have to say that it was great to see this in 3D and a real must if you are to get the best out of the film. It was nice to see a normal film for a change in 3D rather than an action or sci-fi.

The soundtrack was excellent and very different from what I expected. I was expecting to hear songs from way before my time but it was given a modern touch, as it was executively produced by none other than Jay-Z, who was also an executive producer of the film. The rnb touches are fantastic and well placed in the movie. Emeli Sande’s 20s version of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love is one of the outstanding songs in the film.

All in all I thought this film was highly enjoyable and well worth seeing in the cinema if you get the chance. Definitely a film to take the girlfriend to.
